Sonic Generations does its best to include every Sonic character of note, including multiple designs of the same characters. In this twisted tale, the villainous Eggman prepares a plot so dangerous that it threatens the very nature of time itself. After coming across a powerful entity known as the Time Eater, Eggman travels back in time to finally defeat Sonic and his friends. As the Time Eater attacks multiple timelines in the universe, Sonic arrives in a blank, white space. In order to restore time and prevent the collapse of the world, Sonic, Tails, and the rest of his friends must team up with each other (and their past selves) to win the day.

Gameplay

Although the plot of Sonic Generations might sound a bit silly, it ends up being an awesome adventure through the history of the Sonic franchise. The core gameplay is split into two distinct styles, “classic” and “modern”. Classic gameplay is reminiscent of retro Sonic titles from the 90s, while the modern gameplay is similar to recent games like Sonic Colors and Sonic Unleashed. There are nine stages in total, with each stage containing both a classic and modern level. Since Sonic Generations is an homage to the entire Sonic franchise, every single level is a remake or reimagining of a level from an older Sonic title.

Regardless of what kind of level you're playing, Sonic Generations provides an exceptionally fast gameplay experience. You'll speed through colorful levels and collect coins and power-ups, defeat enemies, and even battle enormous bosses. Sonic Team Head Director, Takashi Iizuka, teases the thought of a possible Sonic Adventure remake during a recent interview.

It’s been 20 years since Sonic the Hedgehog sped his way into 3D with Sonic Adventure. Being probably one of the more impactful entries in the franchise, Director Takashi Iizuka sat down to reflect on the work him and the rest of The Sonic Team put into their game.

He mentioned the difficulties of building these 3D worlds for the blue hedgehog and changing the core mechanics the 2D titles had created. “Once we went to a 3D world where you could run in any direction, you ultimately were never sure of where to go. This sort of gameplay required a completely different type of level design,” Iizuka says.

Through all of this reflection, however, Iizuka sees the rough edges and flaws. Though his team still had made the most ambitiousentry in the franchise, Iizuka still sees room for improvement. “However, it was the very first 3D game that we worked on and looking at it now I can see the rough edges it has, which really makes me want to remake it again,” Iizuka says. And there you have it, the beginning of the long wait for a Sonic Adventure Remake.

True the comment seems rather candid, and there has been no official reveals for any remake. But with the head of the Sonic Team saying he wants to remake the 20-year-old 3D platformer, it’s hard not to get hope for the possibility.
